Providing a safe home for Malleefowl
Yongergnow's purpose-built aviaries and protected sanctuary provide a secure environment for Malleefowl conservation, education and research.
The Large Aviary
The large aviary was constructed alongside the Yongergnow Centre and was purpose-built to replicate natural Malleefowl habitat while allowing visitors to observe these remarkable birds in a safe environment.
Originally built to a height of 10 metres, the aviary was redesigned and lowered in 2016 to improve long-term maintenance and sustainability.
This important upgrade was made possible through the support of Lotterywest, the Great Southern Development Commission, the Shire of Gnowangerup, the Yongergnow-Ongerup Community Resource Centre, generous private donors and dedicated volunteers.
Large Aviary
36m × 36m enclosure designed to replicate natural Malleefowl habitat.
Small Aviary
16m × 16m aviary constructed in 2011 with support from Lotterywest and volunteers.
Predator Protection
Specialised vermin-proof fencing prevents digging and climbing predators from entering.
Bird Safety
Orchard netting walls and roofing help minimise injuries from accidental collisions.
The Yongergnow Sanctuary
Established in 2014, the Yongergnow Sanctuary covers approximately five hectares of native bushland protected by state-of-the-art predator-proof fencing.
The sanctuary safeguards the Malleefowl aviaries, chick-raising facilities and the many native species that inhabit the area.
With predators excluded, the sanctuary provides a valuable environment for wildlife monitoring and conservation activities, including periodic flora and fauna surveys.
