Yongergnow Malleefowl Centre is a community owned and operated centre for environmental awareness and education located in Ongerup, Western Australia.
Protecting the Malleefowl and the mallee bush
Yongergnow has a special focus on the conservation of the mallee bush and the endangered Malleefowl. The centre is situated in the Great Southern region of Western Australia, approximately halfway between Perth and Esperance.
The name Yongergnow combines two Noongar words: “yonger”, meaning male kangaroo, and “gnow”, meaning Malleefowl. “Yonger” reflects the centre’s location in Ongerup, meaning place of the male kangaroo, while “gnow” reflects the centre’s objective to protect the Malleefowl.
These Noongar words were chosen to represent Yongergnow’s connection with the local Aboriginal community.

Yongergnow offers guided tours through the centre and around the two aviaries that house Malleefowl.
The centre includes the Fowl Play exhibit, which showcases the iconic Malleefowl, its habitat and the story of how this unique bird has inspired local community conservation and economic development activities.
Visitors can also immerse themselves in the surrounding mallee bushland and take a short stroll to the large mallee bush aviaries that house the centre’s current Malleefowl populations.
