Protecting the Malleefowl through education and research
Yongergnow plays an important role in raising awareness of the endangered Malleefowl while supporting conservation, research and environmental education throughout the Great Southern region.
Education and awareness
Yongergnow's contribution to Malleefowl conservation is primarily through education and community awareness. Each year the centre welcomes visitors, community groups, tour groups and school students to learn about the unique biology and conservation challenges facing the Malleefowl.
To our knowledge, Yongergnow remains the only facility in Western Australia where visitors can observe Malleefowl in a managed captive environment.
In 2010, captive raising of Malleefowl was introduced to complement the centre's conservation activities. During the 2015–2016 breeding season, Yongergnow celebrated its first successful Malleefowl breeding event.
Bird and fauna surveys
Research and monitoring activities have become an increasingly important part of Yongergnow's conservation work.
The first fauna survey within the Yongergnow Sanctuary was undertaken in 2014 under the supervision of Angela Sanders. In 2015, biologist Vicky Bilney obtained her fauna trapping licence and continued the project, expanding the centre's research capabilities.
That same year, Yongergnow broadened its conservation focus by conducting bird surveys within the North Ongerup Malleefowl Corridor and providing contract bird survey services throughout the region.
